Robert L. Taggart et al. to Susan G. Miller, 15 August 1863
Head Qrts 42nd Miss Regt
Bivouac on the Rapidan
Aug 15th1863

Mrs Hugh R. Miller

Respected Madam
In presenting the accompanying Resolutions, it is not with the hope of mitigating the poignancy of your grief, but to testify our respect for the memory of One whom we all regarded with feelings of esteem. The urbanity of his manners had endeared him to us, and while attentive to his duties as commander of the Regiment, in private intercourse he was always the courteous gentleman. Honored at home he had but to extend the circle of his acquaintance to become so whereever known.

In the midst of his usefulness and with a bright prospect before him, he was suddenly cut down. He sleeps the "Sleep that knows no waking". The drum shall no more call him to the ensanguined field to battle for that cause which he had so ardently espoused, and in support of which he offered himself a martyr on the altar of liberty. How bright the course he ran! / How brilliant the example he has bequeathed to us!—But we wish not to intrude upon the sacredness of your sorrow—we desire but the privilege of mingling our tears with yours, and to assure you of our sincere sympathy in this sad bereavement. With sentiments of high regard and esteem

We are most respectfully
Robert Lewis Taggart
