Hd. Qrs. Hindman's Division
Polk's Corps, Army of Tenn.
Chattanooga, Aug 20th, 1863.
Colonel,
By direction of the Major Gen'l Comd'g I forward herewith a return from Brig. Genl. Walthall's Brigade, dated the 18th inst. but which was received at noon today. The one used in making up the consolidated Division return was sent down from Army Hd. Qrs. on the 18th, and was included without hesitation in the return of the 19th. In the next tri-monthly return which of these two reports of Brig. Gen'l Walthall's Brigade should be referred to as "Aggregate last return"?
As [paper hole] is about to be removed still farther from Walthall's Brigade and from Army and Corps Hd. Qrs. the Major Gen'l Comdg would respectfully inquire how he shall proceed in this matter in future, whether he shall wait for the returns from Walthall's Brigade (which will probably be a day, and perhaps two days late), or whether he shall base his return upon the latest one received from Brig. Gen'l Walthall up to the day ap- / pointed, or—farther still—whether he shall omit altogether the report of that Brigade?
I am, Colonel
Very respectfully,
Your ob't serv't,
Walker Anderson
