Luke W. Dugger to Leonidas Polk, 17 September 1863
Camp Beulah, Mobile
Sept 17th 1863

Lieut. Gen. Polk:
                        Sir—
I hope your kindness and famed consideration of your Inferiors in the Service will excuse my boldness in forwarding this unofficial document to you and secure at least its perusal.

From the enclosed you see that I graduated at the State University, a Military Institute, in /61; Since then I have been in the Light Artillery Service and for some time have been 1st Lieut in the Gid Nelson Lt Arty. from this State. On several occasions I have been detailed to drill companies both in Infantry and Lt. Artillery Tactics.

Having once met you casually while a schoolmate of your son Wm at Rev. Mr Wm Stickney's, Marion, Ala, and admired your appearance then as well as your acquired fame as a Military Leader since that time, I have earnestly desired to belong to your Corps.

If directly or by your influence you can obtain for me the position of Inspector or Artillery Officer on a Staff, or other appointment your kindness and good judgment might indicate, you will greatly favor and oblige.

Yours with much consideration
L W Duggar
