23rd Massachusetts Infantry Resolutions, undated
            At a meeting of the Commissioned Officers of the 23d Mass. Vol. Infty. held before Petersburg Va. in commemoration of the death of Lieut. R. P. Wheeler, the following Preamble and resolutions were unanimously adopted:—
 
            Whereas,—We have gathered here to testify our respect for the life and character of our late companion in arms Lt. R. P. Wheeler, and recognizing in him the embodiment of those grand and glorious principles which characterize the self sacrificing Patriot, and these noble and devoted Soldier.
 
            Therefore, Resolved,—That for his loss every lover of his country can mourn and every Soldier feel a kindred Sympathy.
 
            Resolved,—That to us he has ever been the same kind and genial companion, whether in the ranks, or, wearing the insignia of well earned promotion, and never losing sight of those distinguishing characteristics which ever made the true Gentleman and Soldier.
 
            Resolved,—That his connection with us has been a source of pride to the Regiment, exhibiting as he has, those peculiar traits of Northern character, untiring zeal and persevering industry, united / to noble daring and unflinching bravery.
 
            Resolved,—That to the family and friends our Sympathy is respectfully tendered, and with it the consolation that as with us he was known, and loved and honored, so with us shall the remembrance of his virtues ever remain to strengthen and to guide us in the paths of duty he has so nobly followed.
