Thomas L. Hatton to Hugh Hatton, 7 June 1861
Phila June 7/61
Dear Brother
I see by the newspapers that your vessel has arrived at Boston, and take the opportunity to write a few lines to you to let you know that we are all well at home and hope that this letter will find you in good health. I have been very much disappointed at not receiving any letter from you since you wrote from Spezzia. I wrote three letters and sent a great many newspapers and if you received them you will know pretty well how things are going on here, the times are getting worse instead of better evry body is discharged from our place but myself and my wages / have been cut down so low that I can hardly feed myself and if things do not get better soon you may expect to hear that I have joined the Army, for unless a man enlists he stands a good chance of starving. Evrybody almost that you know about the corners have joined the army Reuben Haines died about 6 weeks ago Bal Haines died last Tuesday and will be buried on Sunday. write to me soon and let me know if you get your papers I send some along with this letter. Remember that the Stars & Stripes are the only legitimate colours
Yours &c Thomas Hatton
direct your letter as before
