Hugh Hatton was born on December 6, 1832, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to John and Mary Hatton. He enlisted in the United States Navy on July 7, 1860, and he served as a first class fireman aboard the USS Pennsylvania, Susquehanna and North Carolina. According to his service records, he was 5 feet, 10 inches tall, with dark hair and dark eyes. He was discharged on May 16, 1863.
He married Catharine Ann Arick—his brother’s widow—on May 19, 1865, and they had at least four children: Mary, born around 1865; Andrew, born around 1873; George, born around 1876; and Eliza, born around 1879. They lived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and he earned a living as an engineer. His wife died on March 19, 1887. By 1900, he was living in his son Andrew’s household in Philadelphia.
By the early 1900s, he was suffering from “senile debility, varicose veins of both legs, and disease of [the] heart.” He applied for a federal pension and eventually received one. He fell ill in January 1911, and he died of acute myelitis in Philadelphia on July 25, 1911.
