Thomas L. Hatton to Hugh Hatton, 24 February 1862
Camp on Queens Farm Feby 24/62
Dear Brother
I received a letter from you last week and was glad to hear from you I would have written to you sooner but our Colonel has been putting us through like the mischief lately and there has not been much time to write to any one. from the way our troops have been rakeing things out west it looks very much like that our brigade will have to move from here soon and then I expect that we will have plenty of work. I have been well and like soldiering as well as ever but I tell / you I have seen some very rough times of it this winter the country around here is nearly knee deep with mud and the marching is very bad. I suppose that you have heard about the taking of Fort Donalson and Fort Henry in Tennessee there was some very hard fighting and a great many men killed on both sides but if our forces continue the way that they have been going on for the last month "Secesh" will be played out very soon and this rebellion will be crushed out before six months go round it would be a good thing for the country if it was / settled. I suppose that you will have some sharp work down along the coast soon from the reports here. I had a letter from home Saturday all hands were well, though Albert had been very sick and Kate did not expect him to recover but he has got all right again I will have to close this letter as it is near tattoo and all the lights have to be put out give my respects to all the boys on board have you a man on board your vessel by the name of Peter Miller that came from Kensington if you have tell him that Ike Foster sends his respects to him. he is in / the same tent with me tell him that he is well Write soon and oblige
Your Affectionate Brother
Thomas Hatton
