Office of the Treasurer of the United States,
Washington, July 8, 1862
Room 26—
E Kelly Esq
Sir
Your telegraphic despatch came duly to hand I had and interview with the Surgeon and Steward of the Epiphany Hospital in relation to the body of Thomas Hatton He was burried Sunday morning. was very much decomposed & could not be removed to Philadelphia nor would Adams Express Co take the body unless it was encased in a double metalic coffin. I wrote Mrs. Hatton on Sunday all particulars respecting his death and burial thinking it would in a measure assuage her grief to know he had received some attention in his last moments. I also sent her yesterday the wreath of flowers which were laid on his coffin by a Mrs Gillies of this city. If you still think the body must be removed advise me and I will see the undertaker and ascertain the expense and write you at once. Every thing I can do I will with much pleasure.
Yours truly C M Hartwick
