Dear father and mother
it is with pleasure that I take up my pen to write you a few lines to let you know that John and I are both well and hearty and hope that this may find all enjoying the same blessings we have been here about 8 days and our troops has been out as far as Tuscumbia they had a little skirmishing but the Rebels would not stand they shot the rebel General Forest they did not kill him but he was wounded to bad to move so they parolled him and let him go I was not out with the regt but John was they got in yestedy evening and our regt has gone out in country / a forageing I was detailed about ten days a go to guard the Division train and we are on guard with it yet there is 18 of us and a Lieut and we have the finest kind of times we only have to stand guard two hours in 24 and we go out in the country nearby every day with the teams a forageing and we are liveing on the best that the country affords we have turkey and chicken fresh pork and and mutton butter and honey corn bread and Irish potatoes and sweet potatoes more than we know what to do with but we never miss a meal nor pay a cent Mr Stevens got back to the regt the other day and I got the letter that you sent by him and was glad to hear from you all once more I thought that you had all forgot me and I had just about swore off writeing any more / letters to any body I have wrote two letters to Debarger and have got no answers to them nor no letters from any body else I sent my likeness home to mother when I was at camp Sherman but I never heard whither she got it or not I expect you want to know what we are doing or going to do but I can not tell you a thing about it for I do not know where our destination is they are repairing the rail road as they go our pickets are a skirmishing with rebs every day more or less but nothing to amount to any thing I believe I have told you about all the news for this time I am glad that mary has come home to live I would like to see her and the children and would like to see every body else tell the folks that I send them all my best / wishes I will close for this time hopeing to hear from you soon
