James M. Weddle was born around 1831 in Ohio to Isaac and Margaret Weddle. His father was a miller who owned $10,000 of real estate in 1850. Weddle grew up and attended school in Newton, Ohio. He enlisted in the Union army on September 19, 1861, and mustered in as a private in Company E of the 48th Ohio Infantry later that day.
The regiment took part in the Battle of Shiloh and the siege of Corinth. He was court martialed in February 1864, charged with desertion for being absent without leave from December 31, 1862, until September 1863. The court, however, declared him not guilty. Army officials transferred him to the 83rd Ohio Infantry on January 17, 1865, and he mustered out on July 24, 1865. Weddle returned to Miami County after the war, and he died of “consumption” there on November 12, 1872.
