June 22 1862
 
Dear Mother
I will now take time and write a few lines so you will know that I am well and if you know I am well you will not be consern about me
 
You say I had better come home on the forth and make a visit I have made up my mind to work on the forth for I dont want to loose any time if I can help it /
you wanted to know about his children they have got two a boy and a girl the boy is about 16 and the girl about twelve James & Julia ar they names we had a offel shower of rain yeasterday and I was glad to see it for it was very dry You wanted to no how much I get a month I get anough I guess to pay the postage on the letters I write but i dont no I write two or three every Sunday So you cant complain 
 
you wanted to no what I was doing I have been drawing timber last week to build a house he is building for his sister and I dont no what I shall do this week and it dont make much difernce what I do in the line of work for I have done all kinds of work most since I came here
 
Mother Uncle Oren sets on one side of me reading and his wife on the other hulling straw berries So you see we ar a going to have a straw bery pie 
 
if you can read this you can do more than I can but I can write better if I am amind to but you can all get to gether and hold counsil over it Mother I got a new pair of pants last night I cant think of any more to write of Mother I dont want you to choke me so I will run my tongue out for that would hurt I have wrote this just as fast as I could make my hand go so it looks hard
