Levi Low was born around 1845 in Neversink, New York, to Henry and Nelly Low. His father was a carpenter who owned $150 of real estate and $75 of personal property in 1860. Low grew up and attended school in Neversink before beginning work as a laborer.
He enlisted in the Union army on February 9, 1864, and mustered in as a private in Company C of the 25th New York Cavalry on March 19. According to his service records, he was 5 feet, 10 inches tall, with black hair and hazel eyes. The regiment helped defend Washington, D.C., until August 1864. It took part in General Philip Sheridan’s Shenandoah Valley Campaign in the fall of 1864. Low mustered out in New York on June 27, 1865.
Low settled in Denning, New York, after leaving the army, and he married a woman named Eliza soon afterward. They had at least two children: Sylvester, born around 1867; and George, born around 1869. By 1870, Low was working as a laborer in Denning. He and Eliza got divorced by the early 1890s, and he married Emma Blair around 1893. By 1900, they were living in Hinsdale, New York, and Low was working as a farmer. He died in New York in 1925.
