Joseph E. Wallis to Sarah C. Wallis, 18 March 1863
Eagle Grove
Wednesday Evening
March 18th 1863

Dear Kate or [?]
I write you again on to day, I wrote you on yesterday—as I have a good chance to send this to Chuppen[?] by Mr Cook of our Co who goes up on furlough.

I was some what disappointed on yesterday evening that I did not get any letter from you but I did not put the thing up correct, I think that you wrote on Sunday, but did not send it to the P.O. untill Monday & hence it would not leave untill Tuesday morning & reach here on this evening: so I will fix up myself to receive a long & interest letter from you this eve. I recd a letter from Father on yesterday, which was very lengthy & gave me a great deal to read. it was dated on Sunday 15th. He said that he saw Eli at town on Saturday eve & said all was well, that he sent by Eli 2 of my letters to you & said to me also that there was a great deal of measles & pneumonia in the country—I hope they will not go your way. He also says that Mr Toland has a bad time of the measles white & black, that Mr. T. had lost one very likely negro man by the measles—He also writes me that he is geting along very well farming, only that the beers are growing very fast & that all of our Negroes were well & "fatter" than he ever saw them.

We are all well—no news to write you—when writing the date above, it brought to my recollection what I was doing this time one year ago, it reminded me that one year ago I enlisted as a soldier, did not think that I would be lying around camp one year from that time, but such is the fact & we all must take it the best we can.

we are all getting along peaceful & quiet now in camp—we have almost given out the idea of going to Houston now as there is no order ever been sent yet. We are having fine spring weather now, which I recon you have also

2 P.M. since writing the above I learn that our Regt will go down in town to take the place of Griffin's Battallion. I expect we will go to-morrow or next day. If this is so we will try the city life again & if we do go, there is not much probability of us being ordered off. I hear no other news to day

while I remain yr Affec Husband
