Petersburge Va July the 27th 1864
 
my dear wife it is with the greatest of pleasure I take my pen to drop you a few lines in answer to yours of the 17th which came to hand last evning I was verry glad to hear from you once more and to hear that the lord had answerd my prayers in behalf of you and his blessing ever atend you shal be my daily request
you wrote to mee that you wished I was at home to see a little boy you have thare and to name him I would be glad to doo so but I canot rite now but I hope the time is not far distante when I will. I wold like to consult you in regard to the name Neill Alixander or James Alixander you can call him which you please I wish I was thare to have him babtized while small
 
I hate you dont get my letters for I write evry week and some times oftner I want you to have all the money and bonds layed out in somthing to eate only anough to pay taxes. when I draw / money I will have some $150 dollars to send you and I recon wee will draw soon I hear that Daniel McSwain is selling flour at $25 dollars a hundred and if he does you can get some one to buy the wheate and flower and I will send them the money I you and the babies to have some biscuit
