Line of battle August the 5th 1864
 
dear wife with devout thanks to god I take my pen to drop you a few lines in answer to yours of the 24th of July which came to hand a few hours ago
 
I was verry glad to hear from you and to hear that you and the babies was well I want to see all the little fellers and you worse than all
 
you ware afraid I did not git a nough to eate but I git a plenty to eate of corn bread bacon beef some sugar coffee tobaco peas
 
I am afraid you will not have a plenty to live on but I hope I will git home time anough to clear some land for next year I don't think the war can last longer than this winter I think the yankies is gitting tired of the war without a grate chainge it wont last long and my prayers is that the time ma spedly com when I write you a letter evry week I have no news for you write soon 
 
When this you see remember mee
 
tho parted for awhile I hope wel soon meet
 
ma god bless you and preserve us till wee meet again is the prayers of your devoted husband
