In camp Near New town
Nov 26th 1864
Dear Father & Mother
With pleasure I will respond to your letter which I received 3 days ago and was glad to here from you To here you was as well as comon I am well and tough as a bear and hope I shall be well while I am in the service we had a nother fight with the rebs the 22th of this month after marching one day and a half up the valley but we found them redy for us and thare was a host of them I tell you they had there Infatry / thare besides thare cavalry and we did not have no Infatry with us so we did not have as good a chance as they did but we fought them as long as we could and then retreated in good order and faught them coming back we was gone three days from camp so every thing is quiet now and probly we shall go in to winter quarters before long It is quite cold here now with some rain It froze quite hard the other night when we was on that march
Mother Olvin & I had a thanksgivin super we had a chicken stew we thought we might as well have one here as to have one to home
Mother I spose you are troting around the house the same as ever I should like to step in and take super with you not because I am hungry for I have plenty to eat here of hard tack & meat & coffee and that is good enough for me I here that Jane Stickney is a going to board thare and go to school this winter I am glad of that for you need some body who is a going to teech your school this winter
Wallace is well and also the rest of the Jay boys I dont no whare Sy is nor Edy Jourden but I spose ther to dismounted camp
I saw walter Shipman / yesterday and he sayd Ephraim was sick but I guess not very sick he sayd he had a diarea I guess I shall go over and see him to morrow I expect he will get in to this reg before long
