Dear Father & Mother
It is with the greatest pleasure I attempt to write a few lines to let you know I am well and hope you are the same I received a letter from you last night was glad to hear from you but see you are the same as you allwase was woring your self to death about the boys but they are all right I supose wallace is to home by this time for I heard that they was / all going home that was wounded I have got some mail here for wallace and dont know what to do with it I dont know as he is to the hospital now or not
 
Mother it is geting very warm down here but I supose it will be so we can bake potatoes in the sun boy Only
 
Father what do you think about the president being shot dont it make you feel bad It does me I cant hardly sleep nights to think after he has done so well and then be murderd I saw him to City Point just after Richmond and Peters burgh was taken he looked as smileing and / told some of the troops he would have them all home by the fourth of July I hope they will cetch the one that shot him and cut him into inch peaces I have been back to the reg about a week we are in camp back of Peters burgh a little ways. I heard this morning that we was a going to stay here a month I was all threw the villidge this morning I tell you it is ridle with bullets and shells holes I am a going to try to get a pass to go to Richmond and see bell Island and liby prison I must close
