Peters burgh May 6th 1865
Dear Father & Mother
As I have got nothing to do to day I will write a few more lines to you so you can be trouble to read it I am taken things rather easy these times dont have much to do only keep my self clean and that is hard work when we got back from this last march I took off my shirt to have it wash and laid it down and the lice carid it off wall that is rather a big story I guess but we campt in the old rebels camp two nights and the ground was full of them / so we all was coverd with them Offecers and all I carried my shirts to a niger woman and had her boil them about two hours Mother I supose you feel very well now about the war thare is no war now they are all very peacefull here they are around here now pedling stuff to the Soldiers they mate with us first the same as if thare never had been any war They say they was not to blame for the war they had to fight or be killed They say they never will fight against the government again they have gone to work some of them plowing and sowing and seem to be very hapy because they have got out of it
Mother I think the Cavalry will be discharge soon but it will take some time before they can get around to it but I ant no hury for I am geting 16 dollars a month and that is as well as I can do to home and not work half as hard nether I wish I knew whether wallace was at washington yet or not for I want to write to him but I think he has gone home by this time
