Frederick Reed was born on April 29, 1841, in Centerville, Ohio, to Quintain Reed and Susannah West. His father was a farmer who owned $300 of real estate by 1850. Reed grew up and attended school in Patterson, Ohio, and the family moved to Crawford, Missouri, in the 1850s. By the early 1860s, Reed was living in Leon, Iowa.
He enlisted in the Union army on February 28, 1862, and he mustered in as a private in Company A of the 17th Iowa Infantry on March 21, 1862. He regiment took part in the Battle of Shiloh, the siege of Corinth, the Vicksburg campaign, the Atlanta campaign, and the March to the Sea. Reed mustered out on May 4, 1865.
Reed returned to Iowa after the war, and he married Mary Ann Walters on May 29, 1866. They had at least six. children: Frances, born around 1867; Joseph, born around 1870; Jane, born around 1872; Elizabeth, born around 1874; Adrian, born around 1876; and Edwin, born around 1879. They lived in Jones, Iowa, and Reed worked as a farmer. By 1870, he owned $2,325 of real estate and $650 of personal property.
He applied for a federal pension in March 1873 and eventually secured one. His wife died around 1880, and he married Sarah A. Heath on August 5, 1880. They had at least three children: Melvina, born around 1883; Grace, born around 1887; and Emma, born around 1891. They moved to Sherman, Iowa, in the late 1800s. He died in Elliott, Iowa, of “heart block” on February 22, 1923.
