James Scott
James Scott was born on February 21, 1834, in Carbon County, Pennsylvania, to Charles and Isabel Scott. His father earned a living as a farmer. The family moved to Fox, Ohio, in the 1830s, and by 1850, he was also working as a farmer. They moved to Wiota, Wisconsin, around 1851.

He enlisted in the Union army on August 11, 1862, and he mustered in as a private in Company B of the 23rd Wisconsin Infantry. The regiment took part in the Battle of Chickasaw Bayou. His health deteriorated during his military service, and he was discharged for disability on April 3, 1863.

He returned to Wiota after leaving the army and resumed his work as a farmer. He married Jane Welty on December 13, 1868. They had at least five children: Ida, born around 1870; Beatrice, born around 1872; Lloyd, born around 1873; Maggie, born around 1874; and Prudence, born around 1883. He supported the Republican Party, and he served as county clerk in the late 1870s. Then, in 1887, he was elected to the state legislature.

He applied for a federal pension in June 1879 and eventually secured one. By 1890, he was suffering from chronic diarrhea. He moved to Darlington, Wisconsin, around 1899, and he died there on June 7, 1912.
