Margaret Jane Scott was born in 1845 in Ohio to Charles and Isabel Scott. Her father earned a living as a farmer. The family lived in Fox, Ohio, until 1851, when they moved to Wiota, Wisconsin. She married James K. Van Matre on December 2, 1880, and they had two children. They lived in Darlington, Wisconsin. Her husband died in 1913, and she successfully applied for a widow’s pension that November. She lived with her sister Isabel until at least 1920. By 1930, she owned a home in Darlington valued at $2,700. She died there on May 19, 1933, “after a week’s illness.”
