Camp near Washington
Sunday the 14 1862
 
Dear Father and Mother I recived your letter day before yesterday and was glad to hear that you wer al wel and doing fine We are moved arround from one place to a nother worse than the nine months men and I begin to I was a nine months man and I guess there is more than I wish the same thing. I went to meatting this morning and when meating was out we got orders to swepe ower street and fix for meating in ower head quarters riley hiller one ower seargent at harrisburge he was take sick and left at washington and he died before our Co Compny new whare he was and the meating is his funrel surman which is to be preach this eavening after diner I run the guard and got my face pulled of the reason why I did not put on my belt and epeletes it was sunday and I could not get out with them but I guess I look sasce enough enaway without them 
 
we marched from near fairfax semenary to whare we are now and we can see the capitol and the potomack and I guess you would be as much disapointed as I am we can see vesels sailing up and and down the river and I guess Verginia is the same it is as unlevel as bradford but that some fine place but this war has spoild all the fence and when you come across a fine white house it look like a barn in an open lot no fence what ever and white folks as scarce as fences is and that is none atal and the nigar damum if I must say it for when you meat one he will show the white of his eye as guste as much as to say you white folks cant do that sak sir. laste night we could hear cannon in Merallande but what it ment I dont know When you write guste tel me what the news is and if their is enny attal we have reportes that they wont let they wont let the paper publish enny thing and a nother one is England has given the united states 90 days to settle the matter in and if they / dont settle it in that they wil settle it for them guste write and let me know if it is trew ower regt has got to go the rifle pits to defend in case of an a tack if you have not got the letter which I wanted you to send me some postage stamp I want some and the reason is I cant get them here and when I can they cost 5 cents and I have got no mome money and I guess if I can get some postage stamps I can get a long I have got to go out on dress perrad and so I wil close
