My Dear Mother
I sit myself down on my knapsack this evening to write an immediate answer to your letter which was received by me this afternoon. I was glad to hear you were a little better, thanks to the Lord. I hope you may still continue to gain. My health still continues excellent. our Regt is not quite so sickly as of late although we have already lost fourteen men by sickness since we have been here, but I am thankful there are not more. quite a number of our company are complaining / of soar throats. I have been writing nearly all day for Captain, making out Rolls and footing up the amount of clothing the men have had. you know I am an old hand with the pen, so I have to do all the writing. the Captain is in good health and full of fun. I received those two standards this afternoon also. I havn't had time to look at them yet but I will as soon as I finish your letter. we have got a roaring fire in our old fireplace tonight. the weather has been fair today we had quite a snowstorm day before yesterday, the snow lays about 3 inches deep in some places. you say that Grandmother has sold her / cow, so you need not send me any butter, as I can do without it just as well as not. it was only the thought of getting something from her that I spoke about it in my other letter. there is no signs yet of our getting any pay so I dont want you to send a very large box. it need not be more than a quarter as large as the other; you had better speak for Mr Bergens old store before someone else rents it of him, ha, ha.

Mrs White will be mistaken if she should think I am going to get married very soon. that is something I dont believe in. I hope I shall hear from Peter Lawless before long. give my love to Uncle Charles and Aunt Lib, tell them I am / hearty as a buck. Remember me to John and all enquiring friends. it snowed here last friday as I said before, but you said it rained in Jersey. I wish you would when you send the box send me a piece of chalk to clean my brasses with. tell John to send me a little tobacco. You can send me a little writing paper, but most of all send me a tin plate. I have got the same old tin plate I had in Freehold. I am going to hang on it as long as it lasts I hope this may find you all in good health. I must now bring my letter to a close as I want to read Uncle Abes Proclamation so I bid you good night. please write soon. (I have written to George. H. Austin) my love to all
