Dearest Mother
I have just finished a hearty dinner and it is about 4 oclock, a good time to have dinner, but we have to be fashionable as we go along you know, ha, ha. Well Mother you have not heard from me now in some time, and simply the reason is that I have not had time or opportunity to write until now. and another reason is that there has been no chance of sending a mail, but we have arrived once more where communication is open, and I feel in hopes I shall hear from you while we are here for I have not heard from you I think since we left / Frederick City. but I hope U are all well such is my prayer. I am enjoying very good health as usual, only feel a little tuckered out with the march we have had. nearly the whole Army of the Potomac lays in this vicinity. our Corps went down to Manassas Gap last thursday and had a right smart skirmish with Lee's army or at least a small portion of it. our Brigade was not called in action but was ready on the hill as the skirmish was going on in the valley below. we gave them a good whipping and then left the next morning to overhaul Lee before he could get down here and our purpose has been so far / accomplished, and now if Lee comes this way we want to give him one more good whipping & then we will look for peace our Army is as large now as at any other time during the War. I have not time to write you much this time Mother. I only wish to assure you that we are well. the Boys have all been writing, and it is time the mail went out so I must hurry. I commenced my letter yesterday but had not time to finish it. Charley White sits writing about three yards from me. he sends his love to you give my love to John & bear me in remembrance to all your neighbors / and enquiring friends. I think we will have a mail in today from Washington I guess I will have a doz letters when it does come I expect it will bother you some to make out this writing but perhaps you can study it out. It is raining a little this morn. I guess I will have to get up my shelter tent. our Regt is guarding the supply and ammunition train of the Corps. I dont believe we will move from here in two or three days. I must now close with love to you. May the good Lord over all bless and preserve you.
Your Son
Albert. C.
