Ella S. Guernsey was born on September 8, 1868, in Wisconsin to Francis M. Guernsey and Frances Eugenia Doty. His father was a “dealer in dry goods” who owned $1,500 of real estate and $1,500 of personal property in 1870. She grew up in Clintonville, Wisconsin, and she attended at least two years of college. She married Charles Edward Willoughby in Clintonville on December 2, 1891. They had at least two children: Myrna, born around 1897; and Francis, born around 1899. Her husband worked as a dentist. They lived in Clintonville until the early 1900s, when they moved to Santa Barbara, California. Her husband died there in 1927, and by 1930, she was living in her daughter Myrna’s household in Albany, California. She died in San Diego, California, on November 16, 1958.
