Dear Mother
I seat myself this first opportunity to pen you a few lines to assure you that I am enjoying excellent health. I suppose you have received the letter I wrote you while we were at the Relay House it was written the same morning as we left there in the afternoon. you will see by the heading of my letter that we are now in Maryland Heights. there has been no chance to write since we came here, and if we did write there was no mail. But I hear the mail boy is going to Frederick City this afternoon, and I must say what I have to say, in as few words as possible. I wish merely to assure you that we are all well and in jubilant spirits Sergeant Chadwick is on fatigue duty and has no chance to write in time to send with the boy. you or John must see some of / his folks, Mr Twiford for instance and tell him or them that he is well and will write as soon as there is a chance of sending a letter. The boys are all well without exception. I will write again as soon as I am certain communication is open. the trains are very irregular and we can not tell when there is a mail we are at work digging earthworks on the Heights, and I cannot inform you how long we will stay here. But you must not worry mother we are safe and sound and I thank God that we are all well, and I earnestly hope this may find you all well. give my love to all & tell them the 14th is going to do some good work for the Union with the help of God. the Boys are all anxious for a skirmish but I dont think they will have it very soon, but rest assured the 14th will do its duty and also your son Albert. dont forget to remember Dan Thompson to his folks, as well as all the / boys, for they may be worried about us, as we have had no chance to communicate. I expect there has been all sort of reports concerning us, ha, ha. but now I must close as the mail boy will be going soon. so I close with my love to you
