Camp Hooker, May 18th 1863
Dear Mother
I must speak a few words to you by way of pen and ink. To assure you that your boy Albert is getting along finely. I have at last been discharged from the Hospital and will report for duty tomorrow
I have been at work almost all of today, helping build a summer house in the front of the Hospital, composed of bushes. Then I went up to camp and cleaned up my old shooting iron and equipments.
I am getting fat as a pig again, and now I am fully able for duty again.
I should have written to / you yesterday (Sunday) but I went out to church in the morning. It was quarterly meeting. The text was taken from the sixth chapter of Daniel first five verses. we had a very good sermon, so I thought I would go out again in the evening. The meeting I must tell you, before I proceed farther, was held in a school house, and before I arrived there in the evening the house was so full I couldn't get in to get a seat. They held the meeting out in the woods before the school house in the morning
I tell you Mother it reminded me of Camp Meeting in Jersey. I had a letter from Sergt Amos T. Wood this afternoon he told me to send his love when I wrote home, and / that he was a good egger. The six companies are still at Martinsburgh, Va. and companies G and B are still at old camp Hooker, and likely to be for awhile.
The boys are all well there is no news of any import in or about camp. There were about forty Rebs went by here in the cars this afternoon I suppose they will be taken to Fort Delaware. your papers mother were received by me and also a letter you wrote while in the city.
Give my best respects to all your neighbors and enquiring friends, and give my love to John. I expect the boarders begin to come out, do they not? The weather is splendid
I must now bring my letter to a close, hoping it may find you all well and may the one Lord and Father of us all be with you and give you every needed blessings pray for me and I will do the same. I close and bid you good night
Your loving and ever obedient Son in the service of his country and his country's flag.
Your's &c
