George Hazen Dana
George Hazen Dana was born on September 2, 1837, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, to Francis and Isabella Dana. His father was a custom house inspector. Dana grew up and attended school in Boston, Massachusetts. According to an early biographer, he “engaged in mercantile pursuits in the East Indies.” He returned to Massachusetts around 1861.

In May 1862, he received a commission as 2nd lieutenant in Company D of the 32nd Massachusetts Infantry. He was promoted to 1st lieutenant in August 1862 and then to captain in December 1862. The regiment took part in the Second Battle of Manassas, the Battle of Antietam, the Battle of Fredericksburg, the Battle of Chancellorsville, and the Battle of Gettysburg. He was wounded at Gettysburg on July 2, 1863. The following month, he was assigned to General Napoleon J. T. Dana’s staff. He mustered out on January 19, 1865.

He returned to Boston after leaving the army, and he married Frances Burke on February 22, 1865. Their son Francis was born around 1866. After the war, one biographer wrote, he “resumed business in the East Indies.” The family returned to the United States around 1870 and settled in Newport, New Hampshire. He applied for a federal pension in July 1870 and eventually received one. He moved to Sunapee, New Hampshire, in the late 1800s, and by 1910, he was living in Keene, New Hampshire. He died of arteriosclerosis in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, on October 17, 1917.
