My Dear Mother
As the mail goes out tomorrow I will try and pen a few lines if I have the time and it will be something very strange if we are not ordered to move before I can finish this, but I will make a commencement. I dont intend to write you a long letter only enough merely to inform you that I am / still alive and well.

I hope this will find you all well. There has not been any very hard fighting for the past day or two, but I have been on the go almost ever since I last wrote you.

The weather is very warm. we had a right smart rain yesterday. I thought we would have some fighting this morning but the ball has not opened yet.

We are getting in an open country once more, and it seems like getting in a new world to get out of / the woods once more. if we succeed as we have done for the past few days, we will have the enemy in the low lands, and then the way we go for Richmond.

General Grant is all the while around, and when Mr Lee finds him asleep, it will be a long time from this.

Day before yesterday there was some heavy Artillery fighting. the enemy sent bolts screws & iron of all kinds, but our artillery soon silenced them. I was at the front / with five ambulances and the iron did more than fly over our heads, for a few moments. the Boys are all in good spirits feeling confident in a final victory which will draw the Rebellion to a close.

I suppose you have heard ere this that we lost our old Corps commander Genl Sedgwick he was standing on the rifle pits and a sharp shooter fixed him of. I have been down to Fredericksburgh once with wounded / and I can say that it has been a splendid place at one time, but the devastation of war has almost run it to ruin. it is a pleasant situation for all that. well Mother I have written you a long letter. I dont know as there is anything more that I can write which will be interresting so I shall draw this to a close. My love to John and my earnest prayer is that he will become a Christian. God help to do so. My love to Christian friends may Heaven bless you all

Your Son with love
Albert. /
