My Dear Mother
I will scratch you off a few lines this morning as I am at leisure to assure you that God still keeps me in good health and I earnestly hope this may find you and John enjoying the same comfort.
I came from the front this morning there is nothing going on of any account. it has been very quiet for the past two days, only now and then a little shelling and skirmishing along the / lines. The two Armies are laying within two hundred or three hundred yards of each other. it is probable that somebody will have to leave one of these fine days in June, but it will not be the Army of the Potomac. We are going to Richmond although we are moving rather slow at the present time, but we will get there if we have shovels & spades enough. we will dig to the City. I believe that the Lord is with us and for us, and through Him we will end the struggle. Keep a good heart Dear Mother all will be well, if we do not live to see it all will be well. how sweet / the thought that we are loved by that kind Father above. That He will save us in the end. What is life in this world? compared with the life spiritual where we shall reign with God forever. Why should we so cling to this weary life? when there is a better in store for those that love God.
It was reported last night that Fort Darling was taken I hope it may be true it is also reported that Atlanta, Georgia is in our possession. if so this struggle will be but short.
The weather is very warm and the roads very dusty. I hope we shall have rain 'ere long. I received a / letter from P. Lauliss a few days since. he is well and expects to go to Red Bank in about a month.
The Boys are in good spirits for they cannot feel otherwise, as they are confident of success.
Capt Allstrom has received the commission of Major in the 3rd Jersey. he went to the Regiment yesterday.
We are going to have pork & beans for dinner today. We drew potatoes yesterday. we have plenty to eat. The water is very good
give my love to John to Grandma & to yourself a share
I now close
May God bless you
Your Son & Bro in Christ
Albert.
