Dear Mother
Having a few spare moments once more I will scribble you a few lines. We have been on the tramp since last Sunday and brought up today in a nice clover field near the banks of the River James. how long we shall lay here I dont know but it is a splendid country and the weather being quite warm I for one would not find any fault if we lay here two or three days or more. The pontoons have been laid across the river / and we may move at a moments notice. it looks natural to see such a large river and the transports steaming up and down the stream. it is the most open country we have passed through since we crossed the Rapidan. There is a splendid field of wheat growing in a field containing in the neighborhood of sixty acres adjoining the clover field we are in. There have large crops of corn, wheat and oats been planted but scarcely any round potatoes and but few sweet potatoes. The soil is very good, looks very much like Jersey soil but not as much clay. They scarcely if ever manure the land or / try to keep it in any kind of order. There are but very few fruit trees and they are full of fruit such as peaches, apples, cherries &c.

The roads from where we started from last Sunday were miserable. they couldn't well be called any more than a lane for it would be impossible for two waggons to pass, and in some places it was nothing but quicksand and then again the roads would widen & be as hard as any turnpikes.

I was at the Regiment this morning. The boys all feel first rate and look first rate.

I am feeling first rate I had sort of an aching in my / bowels a couple of days ago but it haint bothered me since and I dont know how it could for I took an awful doce of cayenne pepper tea & scalded it out. I hope this may find you & John in good health and when you write again let me know what has become of Wm Conover, if Homer & Sammy have taken him back or not. Dan Thompson & I were speaking about him this morning. I had forgotten whether he went away from the Bank or not. The mule drivers have got a scythe & gone to mowing. we hav'nt had any mail now in three days I think there will be one in this afternoon. I hope so. I want to hear from you. write soon

my love to you & John. Remember me to any who may enquire & I remain Your Affect Son
(Albert)

May God bless you
