Dear Mother
As I have time this morning I will write you a few lines informing you that by the blessing of God I am still enjoying good health. This I hope will find you all in the same comfort. The weather is exceeding warm, and its terrible dry & dusty, having had no rain of any account in over a month. But it is getting the time of year when we must expect to / have it dry & warm.
Your letter together with Susie's came to hand yesterday and I was very glad to hear you were as well as usual. There is no news of any importance you have a chance to hear what is going on far better than we do who are right at the seat of war.
Our Corps started last Wednesday for the Weldon & Petersburgh R.R. where we arrived soon & without the least opposition, and commenced tearing up the track & burning the ties. The Cavalry & our Corps together / destroyed some where in the neighborhood of 30 miles of the road.
Genl Sherridan relieved us friday night and we came back to our old line
There is now & then the report of a heavy gun on the right but as a general thing it is very quiet being so warm they cannot work artillery
What do you think we had for supper last night. why green peas & green beans & pickled cabbage. isn't Uncle Sam good to us Boys, but I guess we deserve it, if I say it myself. / so you see that you are not far ahead of us in the green pea line. it begins to breeze up. I hope it will blow up a shower before night. I cannot write a long letter Mother, for it is too warm. I wrote to Clemence A. a few days ago. if you go down there Mother you must try & write while you are there. then perhaps you can get her to put in a few lines. give my love to them, to John & yourself. I expect if you are at home you will see our good Chaplain, for he has leave of absence for 10 days & told me he would give you a call.

May God be with you all & bless you
Your Affec Son
