My Dear Mother
It is evening of saturday and hot it is. By the by I can write quite comfortably as the flies have gone to roost, but in the day time they are worse than a swarm of bees. they awfully worry the horses I can tell you, as well as we Mudsills as the Johnies call us. still nevertheless we manage to eat our rations, ha ha. Well Mother time passes / very swiftly, it will be one week tomorrow since I last wrote you but I expect it seems double that period to you. I am happy to inform you that my health is very good considering the warm weather, which will make any one feel dull But I am very thankful for the precious blessing. I only hope you are all in the same blest enjoyment. we still lay here in the vicinity of City Point. if I had known we should have remained here this length of time I would have had direct my letters to City Point, but we are / now expecting to go up in Maryland & rejoin the Corps in a few days. I believe the ammunition train take transportation tomorrow afternoon. Lt. Bookstaver has not as yet returned therefore we have received no mail. I hope we shall soon be with the Corps again then we can get our regular mail. Time as I said before passes very rapidly, but it would certainly pass more pleasantly could we have a letter to read occasionally. It is very quiet at the front tonight but last night I reckon there was a noisy time for awhile and the old shells did more than scream for an hour or more. the Johnies attempted to blow up one of our forts but our chaps were to soon for them. the guns were all taken out of the fort and wooden ones were placed in position in the fort to blind the Johns. the explosion took place / and as a matter of course they charged immediately after, but on coming up they found the Yankees had outwitted them, they give them a cross fire from right & left & they went back howling. they charged three times but it was no go. we cut them scandalously and they gave up the job as a bad one. 8 days more if I am alive I will have been in the Service 2 years. then we Jerseys can begin to count the months.

I wish we could have some rain, it sprinkles a little now for I fear it will not amount to much. I saw Esec yesterday he is at the Corps Hospital at the Point & I didn't know it until day before yesterday. his thumb has entirely healed and he wants to get to the Regiment again bad enough, but they will send any of them on to their Regiments at present. he sends best respects to you & John Our Division was paid off a few days ago. I dont know when we will get our money we have 6 months pay due us now / it will probably be two more before we get any pay, but it is in good hands and be a good little pile when it comes. but I must now close May God bless & preserve you. My love to you & John & remember me / to any enquiring friends

& remain Your
Loving Son Albert
