Albert C. Harrison to Cornelia Harrison and John Lloyd, 26 September 1864
Camp Near City Point, Va.
Sept 26th 1864.
Dear Mother & Father
Being idle for the present I will drop you a few lines to inform that I am still alive & in excellent health as usual earnestly hoping this may find you enjoying the same rich favor.
It is splendid weather. I was at Army Hd Quarters this morning, all was quiet. We still remain in our old camp with no signs of moving very soon. But the way General Sherridan is thrashing old Early, I reckon our Corps will be back 'ere' long. / How are you old fighting 6th. We hear they are pretty well cut again, but they can just hoe their own road. I am anxious to hear from the Regiment & know how they came off. the first report we received stated that our little Major was killed I have not seen the official report of killed & wounded in fact their has been no general report. I reckon Uncle Abe will stand a good sight for the next four years and here is a Boy that would like to throw a vote for him but it being that little Jersey will not allow / the Soldiers to vote in the field. any man that will vote for McClellan is no better than he is & he is a two sided two faced man, say one thing & do another. But if he gets elected he is welcome to his office. But he must not attempt to bring about a compromise with the South. This thing must be settled right, the South must & shall be conquered if it takes four years or four & twenty years.
God is with us & the right will prevail, in good time peace will again be restored & a lasting peace. / We must not grow faint or weary. there are enough men North to swell our Armies to such an extent that we can with one blow sweep out this so called Southern Confederacy. What will encourage us if we do not take courage after the glorious victories in the Valley. If Sherridan continues as of late he will bag the whole of Earlys Army. We have the leading Generals that know their business now & will not let a good opportunity pass unimproved but I must close, wrote soon
May God Bless you all
& with love to you I remain
Your Affec Son
Albert.
