Albert C. Harrison to Cornelia Harrison and John Lloyd, 28 November 1864
Head-Quarters, Ambulance Corps,
3d Division, 6th Army Corps,
Nov 28th 1864
My Dear Mother & Father,
I expect you are anxious to hear from your Boy once more so as an opportunity offers I will drop you a few lines. its awful cold this morning and wood is a scarce article, so you must please pardon this poor writing. We left City Pt last Saturday week ago on board the Steamer John A Warner and it was three days & nights before we landed in Washington. as it was storming so hard when / we reached Fortress Monroe that we couldn't cross the Bay. after landing at Washington we went to the Soldiers Rest, to remain until we could receive our pay. We received a part of the pay due us and then the Officers let us loose to go where we pleased about Washington, but for my part I soon became satisfied that the Capitol of the U.S. was one of the meanest cities I was ever in & a soldier was but little respected by the inhabitants. I expressed one hundred dollars by the Adams Express. I hope it may come / acceptable. I tried for a furlough but it was no go. I gave in my statement as follows that my Father was seriously ill & I was an only child, but it seems there was no notice taken of it. I hope John has recovered 'ere this & that you will write as soon as you can & let me know how you all are, & then if John is no better I will try again for a furlough. give my love to him & may the Good Lord spare him & may he become a follower of Christ. I would that he might learn the fullness of God's / mercy & live ever for Him who died that we might live. I attended church last evening in the town of Bolivar & truly enjoyed myself. we left Washington day before yesterday & arrived at Harpers Ferry last night & marched up to Bollivar Hights & I tell you its a cold place. I dont know when we will go on towards the Corps, probably tomorrow. I believe the Corps is near Winchester about 20 mile from here. we will take the cars a part of the way & I am anxious to get there, but my hands are so cold I must now close write soon & I will again as soon as we reach the Corps
Your loving Son Albert, the good
Lord bless you
