My Dear Parents
It seems to me almost a week has glided by since last I wrote you, but I have been so very busy writing for the Company that I have been unable to spare a moment when I felt like writing But now as I have time before darkness closes over the face of Virginia, I will drop you a few lines in acknowledgement of your kind and loving epistle dated Feb 28th which came duly to hand. Yes I am perfectly well contented at the Regiment and expect to remain so.
It has stormed about twice every other day for two weeks & in consequence a fellow stirring / around out door much goes shoetop deep in mud, which is not very agreeable, but as there is no Ladies around it dont make any difference if a fellows boots dont shine with blacking instead of mud.
The Boys are all in good health and lively as crickets as the spring opens. The frogs are croaking ready to split their throats. I guess the winter is over in this part of the world & I must say I'll be glad of it if such is the case, but I must now go to supper and try to finish this during the evening
The news of the day still continues to make our hearts glad. its truly rich to think how Phil Sherridan slipped up on old Early, so it goes it seems as if we can only be / successful of late in any of our undertakings. God is aiding us in crushing this Rebellion and slowly the Angel of Peace is descending to visit the American People once again. slowly but surely is old Lee being entrapped and he will awake with a howl one of these days and find the trap sprung and many thousand two legged quadrupeds fast.
Lieut Charley sends best respects and is just counting his greenbacks Esec still continues the same free & easy soul as ever, and wishes to be remembered to you. We have meetings nearly every night during the week and there is a meeting held by the Christian Commission near Warren Station. Very many / have been hopefully converted and among them are some of my old comrades in the Train.
I hope & pray that your meetings are still crowned with success. May God bless you all & enable those who are striving to find the Dear Savior precious to their souls give themselves up fully and trust that their prayers will be answered. faith is the great thing We must pray with faith believing that what favors we ask of our Father in Heaven He will surely grant them.
I must now close for this time
give my kind regards to your near neighbors &
I remain Your loving
& Affec Son
