My dear Friends,
Having nothing in particular to do this afternoon I thought that I would write you a few lines. There is nothing to write about as things have been very quiet here in our front, hardly any picket fireing at all. There is some cannonadeing going on now while I write to our right about a half of a mile or less. it is in front of the second Corps. they keep it up prety sharp but it wont amount to any thing.
We have heavy fatigue parties out working on different parts of our lines to day, every man almost has gone over about two miles to the left working on a large fort that they are building there. We have been haveing some very good news from Sheridan. Things look very encourageing now which is favorable for Lincoln. The army will go almost to a man for him. there are a few who may go for "Mac". but not enough to amount to anything. Lincoln is the man who should be elected and who will get the army vote.
I wrote you some time ago that you could not send a box so that I could get it but I have found it different. some of the officers sent after some things which came through very quick all right. now if you dare risk it I wish you would send me some things among which I would like two wollen shirts. I would like them to be the like those I got last winter only there need not be any "fancy work" on the front. get a darker color if you can and make them long enough as for edables you can do what you like / you know what I like. I cannot think of any thing more in the clothing line. there is one thing and that is a box of J Motts pens and 2 quires of good commercial note paper 2 packages of envelopes; dried fruits &c &c can be made up by you. Send a bill of what these things costs. Oh yes another thing postage stamps. they can not be got along with. let me know when I may expect the box and how long before. I suppose buisness is rather brisk there and Appleton looks rather lively now that school has opened again. I would have been there if I had not excepted that commission. My time would have been out the first of next month. as for that matter I could have got my discharge long ago and perhaps I could get it now if I should want it very bad. I think now that I am in and here I had better stay untill I get sicker than I am now. I dont mean that I am sick of the war. I say fight untill every rebel both north & south is made to feel the power of our Government. How is the election going in Wisconsin and Outagamie Co. I suppose Appleton is all right yet. oh I forgot one thing I ment to have asked in my last how about that bounty tax they raised there. how much will it be on the land. I want to keep track of some kind of track how it is running.
I have received those papers, was very glad to get them. I think I shall subscribe for the Madison Journall as in that I can get more state news, especially what is going on in Madison. but my paper is "running low" so I will close. Give my best respects to all who enquire. love to all at home
Yours as ever
Frank
