Dear Wife
I received your kind and generous letter and was glad to hear from home and that you were all well as for my self I am well and hearty and very comfortably fixed for the present I have nothing of importance to write about at this time I was at William West Company on Monday and they were generally all enjoying good health. I saw Sam Betts there he is well & Billy Nagum he is not so well and numbers of others that I knew I also got that shirt you sent by Johny West and the letter & took a heavy laugh over your niger fight as it was the first time I new any thing about it I hope you will continue to keep up your spirit and trust to providence for the rest. there is one thing certain I made a great mistake in enlisting in the infantry service / But I mean to remdy that if I can with your consent and try and get in the Cavalry service if I can the infantry service does very well to lay in camp but when it comes on long marches the Cavalry has decided the advantage of us, for are so weigh down that we haft to carry about seventy pounds, while they have nothing to carry but have horse to carry them If I do go in any it will be fishers company as he is and old friend of yourn I must now close for the present You will haft try to send me some and envelopes & paper for I have no money and dont want any as long as I can get postage stamps they cant be got if you send me any dont send more than a couple at a time you must kiss Sallie & Charlie for and reserve one for your self, so good bye
