William W. Thompson was born on November 24, 1832, in Sunapee, New Hampshire, to Aaron and Lydia Thompson. He married Julia A. Hall on December 5, 1854, and their son Warren was born around 1856. They lived in Manchester, New Hampshire, and he worked as a laborer. The couple got divorced on December 1, 1860, as a result of “(alleged) extreme cruelty and adultery.”
He enlisted in the Union army on September 12, 1861, and he mustered in as a private in Company G of the 6th New Hampshire Infantry on November 28. The regiment took part in the Second Battle of Manassas, the Battle of Antietam, the Battle of Fredericksburg, the siege of Vicksburg, the Overland Campaign, and the siege of Petersburg. He was wounded at Fredericksburg on December 13, 1862. He mustered out on November 28, 1864.
He returned to Sunapee after the war, and he married Elizabeth M. Tandy on September 25, 1863. Their son Arthur was born around 1866. He worked as a carpenter, and by 1870, he owned $400 of real estate and $200 of personal property. He moved to Marlow, New Hampshire, in the 1880s. He died there of “valvular lesion of [the] heart” on August 31, 1911.
