July 21st/62
In Camp near Harrisons landing Va
Charles Rose Esqr
I take this oppertunity to inform you that I am enjoying pretey good health at the present time I presume it is hardley nessesary to give you a history of our doings and suferings on this infernal Penisula as the newspapers are full of descriptions of our marching fighting diging rifel pitts choping down forrest and making cordoroy roads over the numeres swamps that intercept our march for God sake Charley never think of soldering if eney person should ask you to enlist have him / arrested amediately and convayed to some place of confinement.
We are now a good deal further from Richmond than we ware two months ago after all the hard fighting don here the Rebels have got back about all we ever gained tho we now ocupy a verey strong position whare we are but that is not taking Richmond by a hell of a cite we mite as well have a strong position in Penn and for my part I would a d—d cite rather than have it here.
I receive a letter this morning from the post master at Washington City informing me / that thare was a valuable letter for me in that office and that I would have to call for it in person or send an agent I wrote to him to send the leter on at my risk giving him a receipt You should not have registered the letter a letter with money is far safer without but I will get the money now for certen You can look for me home soon but you nead not say to eney person you are looking me we will be payed in a few dayes I will wait for my so I can save your money My Love to your Mother the childer & all the rest My respects to Kirn & Jim Kearney
Yours Truly
