Margaret Simon to Ernest Simon, 24 July 1864
Providence July 24th 1864

Dear Earnest
You no doubt think it strange you have received no answer from me. I will tell you the reason I wrote to farther sunday and was going write to you. And some one came in and had to intertain them.

How are you getting along and how do you like military. I wish I a boy for I think they see a great deal more and have a easy time

Adel has gone home and Em has come she came this morning. she looks just the same as ever. you have heard from farther about your new cousin what do you think of it. I hope she will be happy. I have seen his picture and like his looks verry much. you must write to Hale and plague him about May Green. she says she is going to be married when she is eighteenth

How do you and Mr Bishop get a long I think he behaves verry strange is he with you now. is farther promoted I see by the papers that he is in command of two forts. does he like that and do the men behave well

I must tell you about Horace harvey. he has been trying to leave school and go to work and his mother did want him to leave, so what does he do one morning but get up verry early and they never saw any thing of him for two days his mother thought she had better let him have his own way for a little while and see how he would like work. so she let him leave and he went to work he did not stay home long for I ges he had enough of work and now he and Captain are going out to attlebour to see if they can get a job work out their is verry good

How did you spend your fourth. we had a verry pleasant time Jim Emry was here. he said he would like to see you. we said a great many we wished you and farther was home. you must try and home to the wedding for I want you for my beau I think we will make the best looking couple, dont you. I want you to earn some money and then when you come home we will leave providence for a short time and and see some of the wonders so hurry and see if you cant come soon and I will try and save enough to go to the wedding Farther says I cant have you for a beau I like to know the reason why he thinks you are to tall, but I dont so please engage you self for the next four years that will be short time what a handsome couple we would make going to new york. you with your blue coat and brass buttons and those brass straps next your arm how the Jersey people would stare and say what a fine looking couple. I think that is what they would say dont you.

What do you think about this war is it never coming to a end I am tiard and want you all home what a time we would have if it was only over. does farther like being in the army as much as ever. does farther feel well and how does he look. take good care of him.

I dont think would ever have gone in the army if it had not been for the trouble he has had you do not know how we miss the old home. Roby wants me to take him up their and for me to sit down and then he will go all over and then he will come home. they all remember all about the place and want to see it. we never go over their or it is hard to see the old home and know it is / ours no longer since we have commenced to earn our own living we can see how hard it is but we never complain for good is good we have you and farther yet and when you come home if the lord is willing we will try and make life happier then it has been I have done so many wrong things that some times I should like to live my life over and see if I could not do more good to me and and make myself better. I must close for I have promised to let Louise write a post script to my letter you will excuse the looks of the writting for I am in a hurry and my head pains tell Farther I send him a kiss and you also. now please write and write a long letter look how much I have written. tell farther I will write this week take good care of your self and look out for bad men
