George W. Lee was born around 1842 in Plymouth, North Carolina, to William and Mary Lee. By the early 1860s, he was working as a waiter in Rhode Island. He married Mary Ann Turner on December 17, 1863, and the couple apparently had no children.
He enlisted in the Union army on August 25, 1863, and he mustered in as a private in Company B of the 14th Rhode Island Colored Heavy Artillery on September 14. The regiment was later redesignated the 11th USCT Heavy Artillery. According to his service records, he was 5 feet, 7 ¾ inches tall, with black hair and hazel eyes. The regiment served in Texas and Louisiana, and he was promoted to corporal in February 1864. He mustered out on October 2, 1865.
He returned to Providence after the war, and he earned a living as a hod carrier. By 1870, he owned $400 of real estate. He died sometime after 1870.
