Mary Ann Turner
Mary Ann Turner (maiden name: Barnett) was probably born around 1824 in Baltimore, Maryland, to Francis and Nancy Barnett. She probably married a man named Turner, and their son John was born around 1846. She eventually moved to Providence, Rhode Island, and she earned a living as a “washer woman.” By 1860, she was apparently no longer married. She married George W. Lee on December 17, 1863, and the couple apparently had no children together.

Her husband and her son both served in the 11th USCT Heavy Artillery during the Civil War. While they were away, she lived in Providence’s Olneyville neighborhood and earned a living by washing and ironing. She opened an account at the Providence Institution for Savings on January 27, 1864. By 1870, her husband was working as a hod carrier in Providence, and they owned $400 of real estate. She died sometime after 1870.
