John Brown to Lucretia Brown, 7 August 1862
New-Orleans, La. August 7th 1862
Dear Mother
I got a letter from you last Tuesday mailed the 22th of July and was verry glad to hear from you and to hear that you are well. My health is good. We have moved from the Mint to the hall of the Louisianna Benevolent Association which is a verry fine place. it is the best quarters we have had yet it is a verry fine place and I like first rate. Day before yesterday there was a great fight up to Baton Rogue the Capital of the state the Rebels were commanded by Gen John C. Breckinridge who lost his arm. Gen Williams who commanded our forces was killed but our troops / whipped them and took 300 prisoners. The wether is cooler than it has been and we have showers evry day. the health of the troops is growing better. I expect that we shall be paid off before long for we have signed the pay rolls again Jam Cole of Moderation cooks for our Company now. I got a letter from Almiria Benson about 3 weeks ago and was verry glad to hear from her. I suppose that there is a great time enlisting in Maine. I am glad you are going to get a good crop of hay this year I suppose you have got done haying by this time. At the last of this month they will owe us 52 dollars but we shall be paid of before that time. I dont think of any thing more to write now. Write as soon as you get this good bye for the present
From your son John Brown
