Dear mother
I received a letter from you day before yesterday wrote Dec 21th and I was verry glad to hear from you. My health is good and has been since I last wrote to you. We left Baton Rouge the 6th of Jan and came to this place which is on the west bank of the river and 20 miles below Baton Rouge. There is 4 companies of our Reg't here and 4 of the 52 Mass and one company of Cavalry This place is a village about 2 as large as Moderation. We are encamped in the streets. There is no one here except women and children. The men have all gone to war. The wether is verry pleasant and quite warm. The guard / duty is not verry hard here and we have to go on picket guard once in 8 days. We live well get all the fresh beef we want and some chicken. I send my love to Madison and Marsilla Hodgen Hogden. I dont think of anny more to write. Write as often as you can. Direct to New-Orleans as before. I got those stamps. Good bye for the present

From your Son,
John Brown.
