My Dear Mother
it is with the gratest of pleasure for me to set down to day for to inform you of my health which is very good at present and I am kicking yet although I have seen a good many of our Boys cut down in a minit and I am sparred up to this present moment and I am in hope that these few lines will find you all enjoying all the comfort of life &c But you must excuse me for not of writing before it is because I had not any paper to write and I had not got pay of to buy enny with till you sent me some But in regard to Port Huckerson saw the whole of it / it surrender of it and I saw all of its Prisoners and I saw them lay down there arms &c. But I cant expect that you get all correct news of it for we have seen it to our eyes But we lay 43 days and nights under the enemy fire all the time But the nearest that I came was to have a ball put through my cap and that did not start me a hare for we have got use to it. But I have receive 4 letters from you and I ant answer any of them till today and I am a shame of it Mother to think that I had not written before but I have been on marches so much that I am tired when I am in camp and lazy to mother

But I receive a letter from you was wrote July 12 and one was June 30 July 19 one was July 23 But as fast as I can get time I shall write to you my dear mother

But I see in the paper that Portland had a quite of a time in regard to meads of coming in to it But I dont expect that it was any thing in compereson to Port Hudson a tall but in regards to Alburt Hodgeson I ant see him for 3 months But I guess that he is a live But I will try and find out in a few days if nothing happens to me /

But I cant think of much this morning for I am tired at present But I must come to a close for this time Remember me and pray for me my mother in all of your prayes
