Head Quarters 1st Me Cavalry
Feb 15th 1865
Dear Brother
Knowing it is often a long time that you don't hear from home and so may not hear from me and be uneasy about me as you will learn by the papers we have been fighting. I will just drop you a few lines and inform you I am all right, but we had a hard time and came in very tired and hungry.
I hope we have gained a good point, but don't think all was gained that was intended to be and it will take another move before the great spring campaign shall begin, so don't be surprised at any time to hear we are on the war path again. /
My health never was better and if nothing happens I expect to get put through some this next summer for the prospects are now that there will be most desperate fighting this next campaign; but I fully believe we will subdue this most wicked rebellion yet.
My finger does not trouble me but little and you see I can use the pen about as well as before it was hurt, but think I cannot use the sword so well, but can the pistol so Johnny Reb must look out not get too near.
I hope you and yours are in good health and prosperity. I assisted Dimond Hamilton to get a furlough the other day and if he gets it will call and tell you all the news. It is very rainy here today. Write very soon and oblige
Your Brother
