Dear Friends,
Well here I am as usual once every week, to write a few lines to you, to let you know that I am well as usual, and hope that you are the same. I dont wait for the mail to come for fear I wont get a letter. we had some mail come last night, but there is two or three bushels yet to look over down at hilton head, and I think that I shall have some letters when it comes. fowler let me read his letter from Aunt Betsy, and I guess that I shall have to write her a letter. I have not heard from dan since I wrote to you before. /

we heard some music yesterday. there was a fleet of five or six gun boats went round toward savanna last sunday afternoon, and yesterday they engaged four vessels loaded with provisions and wood, for fort pulaski. there was three gun boats come from savanna to help them but they had to back out, for our gun boats are to much for them. since I begun this letter I have been round in sight of where the fight was yesterday. there was two or three shots fired to day and we could see the smoke. there was four of us went out in the sail boat to day without asking the Capt and we were gone till night, and when we came back to / night the Capt looked some mad but he did not say a word, but to morrow we will hear from him. it was the Orderly, Sam Haynes, myself and C. M. Hart 3rd Sergt and Corporal James M. Cole. we aint none of us afraid of him, either one of us can drill the Company better than he can, but you must not think that I mean to say anything against the Capt. Corporal J. M. Cole is coming home to recruit for six months to come, and I think that I shall send you some money when he comes. I think we will get our pay next week. I hope so any way. /

Well I shall have to stop, for I must write a little to aunt betsey. please send Olive's letter to her. give my love to all inquiring friends, and tell them to write. direct as before, Port Royal, SC. Col welsh's 45 regt, Company I Pa V.

So good by for this time.

I remain as ever, your
brother, Wm Chase, to
G. W. & Mary Kennedy
