William Chase to George W. Kennedy and Mary Kennedy, 17 February 1862

Kind friends,
It is with pleasure that I sit down to night to write a few lines once more to you and it is on a marble top table. Something that I never done before.
We are all well as usual, and I hope that these few lines will find you the same. some of our men went over on bull island last week and they got some pretty nice furniture and nice round top table, white marble, and a variety of other things of all discriptions.

we have not got any mail yet, but I must not stop writing for that. I wrote a short letter last week, but the mail has not gone out yet, and so I thought that I would write another letter to let you know that we were here yet, and are likely to remain here some time yet. we have not got our pay yet, but expect to next week. we will be mustered for pay again the last day of this month, and if we dont get our pay before that we will have four months pay due us. the fleet down around Savannah burns some powder every day. one day last week one of our gun boats / cut a rebel gun boat all to pieces. the contrabands come over from the main land every week. one night last week there was twenty five came over. they had three boats, we kept all the boats. the niggers say that the rebels are moving all their property back into the country and fixing to leave when Savannah is attacked. one of our gun boats threw some shot into the city last week. there is a good many vessels down around Savannah and fort pulaski. well, I cant think of anything to write. Fowler sits here writing a letter to his Mother, to send with this. Corporal Carvey just told Jond to write something about him /

One of our Corporals has been promoted to fifth sergeant, his name is Solon S. Dartt, from Charleston. I hear that Rus rides the school marm around to spelling schools. tell him that he must stop that or he will be sick all the time. well I guess that I have wrote enough this time. I send this rose to Margaret. give my love to all inquring friends, if any there are, and write as often as you can. Direct as before,
