Daniel Chase to Mary Kennedy, 4 March 1862
Munson hill Va.
March 4th/62
Dear Sister. I take this opportunity to let you know that I am well at present and hope that those few lines will find you the same. I received yours from Middleburg and was glad to hear from you once more. you must excuse me for not writing before for the next day after I received it we went on Picket and was gone two days and nights and when we got back we were ordered to hold our selves in readiness to march in 15 minits notice so we have been pretty buisy for a few days past. we have got our small tents so that three men can carry their own tent. / we were to have 5 days rations and were going to leave a guard of 30 men in camp to take care of things till we came back. we have not gone yet but are all ready to go.
General Banks has crossed the river to Harpers ferry and is going around in the rear of Manasses and it is supposed that we will advance to the front and so attack them from both sides. severel large siege guns have already been brought to our briged head quarters and I suppose that all that is lacking is dry roads, and then I suppose that there will be some hard fighting but Manasses has got to give up at any rate.
by the way you said that you would like to / have us boys come out there in sugaring time but I am afraid that you would not have enough for us to eat. but as we cannot come why you can save some till we can come and that will be when the war is over. Mary you must excuse this poor writing this time for I have used some half dozen pens and can't get a good one after all. write back when you get this and let me know all that is going on in that part of the country. my respects to all inquiring friends and keep a share for your self.
so good by for now
